In this workshop, presented by EXCEL, attendees will learn more about the benefits of physical activity for individuals living with and beyond bladder cancer, tips for becoming and staying active, and resources available to support your active living.
Understanding Physical Activity and Exercise
Physical activity includes the movement you do throughout the day, like walking, chores, or taking the stairs, while exercise refers to structured activity intended to support physical and mental well-being. The workshop emphasizes that all movement counts, and even a few minutes of gentle stretching or light walking may help people feel more mobile and engaged.
What Research Is Exploring About Exercise and Cancer Care
Much of the session focuses on the growing body of research exploring how movement may play a role in the cancer journey. Studies continue to examine potential benefits for physical function, fatigue, mental well-being, and daily activities. Although bladder-cancer-specific research is still developing, early findings suggest that structured programs tailored to individual needs may support improved mobility and confidence, including before and after surgery.
Ongoing trials like the CAN-MORE and Cadence studies are currently examining how exercise programs designed specifically for people with bladder cancer might support different stages of recovery.
Building an Activity Routine That Works for You
The workshop shares helpful strategies for easing into a routine, including starting slowly, listening to your body, and leaning on social support. Simple steps like setting small goals, walking with a partner, or using weekly planning tools may help people stay motivated and consistent. Behaviour-change tools such as goal-setting worksheets and progress trackers are available through EXCEL’s website under Resources.
Supporting Your Active Life with and Beyond Bladder Cancer
This workshop encourages a positive, sustainable approach to movement and one that adapts to your energy levels, treatment timeline, and personal goals. Physical activity and bladder cancer can look different for everyone, and exploring what feels right for your body is an important part of the process.
