Navigating Your Bladder Cancer Diagnosis

If you’ve been diagnosed with bladder cancer, you are not alone.

Your medical team has likely explained the extent of your disease and how they plan to treat it, but you may have more questions. Are you feeling emotional stress? Fear? Uncertainty? Like your whole world will change and you don’t know how to cope? Do you wish you had someone to support you, not just at every medical appointment, but when you’re alone and thinking?

All those feelings – and many more – are very normal. After all, the word “cancer” has a way of scaring you but there is a supportive community at Bladder Cancer Canada, many of whom have lived with bladder cancer for years. We are here to help you.

Explore our resources today to find all the information you need to successfully navigate your diagnosis.

Newly Diagnosed?

There are several resources available to help guide you through your diagnosis, including:

  • Where to start
  • Tips for choosing your doctor
  • What to expect when meeting your doctor
  • Questions to ask your doctor
  • And other resources to help navigate your diagnosis

Doctor Visits

Should you have a family physician, they will refer you to a urologist. You will want a urologist specializing in bladder cancer and choose someone you trust and feel comfortable talking to. Also, you can get a second opinion if you are unsure of the treatment regime recommended. It is important to understand your choices and discuss them with loved ones to make informed decisions.

Dealing with Emotions

It is natural to feel all kinds of emotions when hearing the words “You have cancer.” We have resources to help you identify and work through emotions so that you can focus on your overall health.

Health and Wellness Resources

Explore the role of a healthy lifestyle in prevention and find practical tips on achieving and maintaining good health pre- and post-bladder cancer treatment. Understand the impact of an unbalanced diet, stress, and a lack of sleep, and discover better eating habits and lifestyle changes to improve well-being.

Clinical Trials

Explore access to additional bladder cancer therapies through clinical trials, which are research studies testing new medical approaches. Participating can help advance treatment development and depending on your individual situation, you may qualify for a clinical trial. Ask your urologist about trials available to you.
