Bladder Cancer Awareness Month

May Is Bladder Cancer Awareness Month

Bladder Cancer Awareness Month is recognized globally every May. It is an opportunity to shine a light on this common, yet lesser-known cancer. Throughout the month of May, we aim to bring awareness to bladder cancer, highlighting patient stories, experiences, stats and figures, as well as important information about this disease and its symptoms.

Bladder cancer is the 5th most common cancer in Canada, with over 80,000 Canadians currently living with the disease. Approximately 37 Canadians are diagnosed each day, meaning over 13,400 will be diagnosed this year alone. (Based on projections from Canadian Cancer Statistics 2023.)

By raising awareness of bladder cancer symptoms and early detection, our hope is that more patients will be diagnosed and treated earlier to preserve their bladder and quality of life. Supportive care, bladder cancer treatments, and patient support groups play a crucial role in managing the disease and improving outcomes.

Bladder Cancer Awareness Month 2025 in Canada

Throughout the month of May, Bladder Cancer Canada highlighted patient stories and raised awareness of bladder cancer through social media, newsletters, landmark illuminations, and advertising.

The Bladder Cancer Canada community was introduced to the inspiring stories of Stéphanie, Tim, Susan, and Ann, reminded of the signs and symptoms of bladder cancer, and educated on current national and global statistics.

We also launched our new Hematuria Brochure, created to empower both the medical community and patients with the knowledge needed to recognize one of the most critical early warning signs of bladder cancer—blood in the urine, also known as hematuria.

Landmark Illuminations Across Canada in Recognition of Bladder Cancer Awareness Month

Throughout the month, notable landmarks across Canada were lit up in red and yellow to shine a light on bladder cancer. We want to extend a huge THANK YOU to our wonderful volunteers who helped submit applications and to all those who shared photos of the illuminations in their communities.
