Founded in 2014 by Bladder Cancer Canada, the Canadian Bladder Cancer Information System (CBCIS) serves as a multidisciplinary database of depersonalized patient data to assist with further research and advancements related to bladder cancer, its symptoms, treatment opportunities, and outcomes. CBCIS is funded by Bladder Cancer Canada and pharmaceutical project partners.

How does CBCIS work?

CBCIS has been actively enrolling participants from health centres across Canada. As of 2024, CBCIS has over 9,000 participants whose anonymous data provides insights into current bladder cancer practices and treatment outcomes. Multiple datapoints are collected from each participant, and health centres are encouraged to log data over time to follow the patient journey. This historical patient data is analyzed to inform future research and advancements.

CBCIS is managed by a steering committee of seven members, with Dr. Wassim (Wes) Kassouf and Dr. Peter Black as Co-Chairs, and benefits from the guidance and involvement of an operations committee, which includes two physicians from each participating centre.

What is the goal of CBCIS?

The goal of CBCIS is to identify gaps in bladder cancer care, evaluate unmet needs, and improve the management of bladder cancer patients. As CBCIS becomes a rich repository of data, we will be able to find answers to important questions about the clinical management of bladder cancer.

The CBCIS team also reached a milestone with a first publication led by Dr. Kulkarni’s team; Obesity and Complication Risk From Radical Cystectomy: Identifying a Body Mass Index Threshold within the Journal of Urology. There continues to be a number of additional CBCIS projects in the works that range from the feasibility to full project phase, that will help address any gaps in the Canadian landscape.

Another study by Zlotta et al. was released in the Lancet Oncology Journal thanks in part to the data collection; Radical Cystectomy versus Trimodality Therapy for Muscle-Invasive Bladder Cancer: a multi-institutional propensity score matched and weighted analysis.

The Canadian Bladder Cancer Information System (CBCIS) continues its path to becoming a robust dataset capturing real-world Canadian data at various academic institutions involved.
