What is new in bladder cancer treatment and research?

By Bladder Cancer Canada | Webinars | 15 April, 2024 | 0

A recording from our education event on April 15, 2024, in Toronto, ON. In this presentation, Dr. Srikala Sridhar provides insights into bladder cancer fundamentals, covering frontline treatment options. Additionally, she explores the latest advancements and research in bladder cancer treatment advances, including antibody drug conjugates, FGFR Targeted Therapy, and other emerging treatment strategies for advanced bladder cancer.

Advances in Bladder Cancer Treatment

Recent years have seen significant progress in bladder cancer treatment advances. Standard treatments such as BCG immunotherapy, chemotherapy, and radical cystectomy remain foundational. However, new approaches like antibody drug conjugates and FGFR targeted therapy are offering hope for advanced or metastatic disease. These emerging bladder cancer therapies are designed to target cancer cells more precisely, improving outcomes while minimizing side effects.

Immunotherapy and Targeted Therapies for Advanced Bladder Cancer

Immunotherapy harnesses the patient’s immune system to attack cancer cells. While traditional chemotherapy attacks rapidly dividing cells, immunotherapy can offer longer-lasting control, particularly after initial chemotherapy. Drugs like EV in combination with immunotherapy have shown promising response rates in clinical trials. Additionally, FGFR inhibitors target specific growth factor receptors present in a subset of bladder cancers, offering a personalized approach for eligible patients.

The Role of Clinical Trials for Bladder Cancer

Bladder cancer clinical trials continue to drive innovation in bladder cancer care. Patients participating in trials gain access to novel therapies earlier and contribute to research that may improve future treatments. Whether exploring frontline combinations or third-line targeted therapies, clinical trials are critical for advancing care and improving survival outcomes.
