Donate PLANNED GIVING

IT'S EASY TO DONATE

A planned gift is a charitable donation which can be arranged during your lifetime, but is not available to Bladder Cancer Canada until sometime in the future. You can make a bequest in your Will or name Bladder Cancer Canada as a beneficiary of your life insurance policy, a security or mutual fund, or Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP). These are planned gifts that offer you financial benefits, while still allowing you to give generously and leave a legacy that will continue to impact others.

LETTER OF INTENT

Have you already included Bladder Cancer Canada in your estate plans? Please complete our Letter of Intent to let us know how you would like your gift to be used.

LETTER OF INTENT

BEQUESTS

Estate planning doesn’t need to be complicated. A bequest is the property or money that you promise to give to another person or organisation after you die, and can be as simple as including a sentence in your will, such as:

I direct my trustee(s) to give the sum of $_______ in cash or in kind to Bladder Cancer Canada (charitable number BN 836126060 RR0001), to be used where it is needed most.

Advantages to consider:

  • Bequests can add value to your estate, as they may lower federal and provincial income taxes on death
  • Bequests often allow a donor to give a much larger gift than may have been possible during a lifetime
  • Designations for bequests are revocable – you can change your mind and retain control of your assets while living
  • There is no minimum donation amount for a bequest

SECURITIES AND MUTUAL FUNDS.
EASY AS 1-2-3.

Here are a few of the benefits of donating stocks and securities:

  • Eliminate capital gains tax
  • Receive a receipt for the Fair Market Value of the stock upon transfer
  • Excess tax credit can be carried up to five years
  • Reduce taxes to an estate

To make your donation, contact us at michellec@bladdercancercanada.org or 1-866-674-8889. We’ll ask about the securities you’d like to donate and how we should contact your financial advisor or investment firm.

Download the Letter of Instruction Form and take it to your financial advisor to complete along with any other forms they may require. This will allow your financial institution to transfer the shares directly to Bladder Cancer Canada. Please ensure you send us a copy for our records. If you prefer, you can access an online version of the form by clicking here.

Once Bladder Cancer Canada completes the sale, we will contact you directly to let you know the value of the donation. We will then issue a charitable donation receipt for that full amount. If you include the securities donation in your will, we will contact your trustee.

LIFE INSURANCE POLICIES

There are several ways of making a gift through life insurance:

SURRENDER AN EXISTING POLICY

Perhaps you purchased a policy for financial security when you were younger, but you no longer need it. The ownership of your policy can be transferred to Bladder Cancer Canada. In this case, you receive a tax receipt for the fair market value of the policy at the time of your gift. If premiums are still being paid on the policy, you will receive tax receipts for all future premiums.

PURCHASE A NEW POLICY

You decide to purchase a new policy and name Bladder Cancer Canada as the owner and beneficiary. You receive a tax receipt for premiums paid each year. BCC receives the value of the life insurance policy upon your death and uses the funds to support our mission.

DESIGNATE BCC AS THE BENEFICIARY OF YOUR POLICY

You can name Bladder Cancer Canada as a beneficiary of an existing insurance policy. Upon your death, BCC will receive the proceeds of the life insurance and your estate will receive a charitable tax receipt equal to the policy’s death benefit.

ADVANTAGES TO CONSIDER:

  • Bladder Cancer Canada issues you official tax receipts for premiums paid on the policies it owns
  • The gift of a life insurance policy often allows a donor to give a much larger gift than may be possible from current income
  • The gift isn’t subject to taxes, fees, and cost of probate
  • There is no minimum donation amount for a life insurance donation

IN THE WORDS OF ONE OF OUR DONORS:

A year has passed since Dawn skated away. Her adversary, originally diagnosed as bladder cancer, spread relentlessly over 38 months. During this dance with mortality, both of us learned many lessons. One such teaching was the value of team work. Bladder Cancer Canada, and its generous group of dedicated volunteers, embraced Dawn and provided vital supports. In Dawn’s memory, I have chosen Bladder Cancer Canada as beneficiary to a legacy gift modelled around the provisions of a life insurance policy. It is my goal to ensure the sustainability of BCC while growing patient advocacy, education, and research initiatives. Dawn’s spirit of giving continues through this plan.

– G.N., BCC Donor (June 2016)
