Where’s Mel? is a walking adventure across Canada to raise bladder cancer awareness.

Mel is our bright yellow lemon mascot and is BCC’s ambassador – she or he is the SPIRIT of the countless volunteers, donors, patients and their families, with the mission of raising awareness of bladder cancer across Canada.

Mel is walking in support of this year’s virtual walk, taking place anytime this September. You, too, can walk wherever you are!

Run on your treadmill, hike your favourite ravine, or stroll your neighbourhood. Whatever you choose, stay safe! You can be like Mel – share your own photos and videos with us by posting on social media with the hashtag #BCCWalk or email them to us at walk@bladdercancercanada.org.

Our goal is to have Mel visit every province (and even some of the territories) in the next 12 months. You will see Mel in the bodies of our spirited volunteers at various landmarks across Canada. Here are some of the places that Mel has visited so far!

Want to see Mel in your city? Mel is always checking email while on the road. Please send any question, comments or locations suggestions to wheresmel@bladdercancercanada.org or leave a comment for us on social media.

To participate in the virtual walk, please visit www.bccwalk.ca for more information, and  get started today.

We hope to see you soon in a city near you!

Mel’s Travel Log:

“Hi, it’s me Mel! I’m kicking off my journey across Canada with a visit to Major’s Hill Park and Parliament Hill. Happy Canada 🇨🇦 Day!” Many thanks to volunteers Snookie, Stefanie and Tom for their #WheresMel?!? submission. (July 1, 2020)

“Mel, here! I’ve made my way to the shores of Lake Ontario, and will be spending a few days in the beautiful city of Kingston! I’m a lucky lemon!” Many thanks to volunteers Stephen and Gerry for their photo submission that inspired the #WheresMel?!? travel adventures! (July 6, 2020)

“I heard the mountains calling…MEL. I’m glad I listened! Hanging out in the beautiful Rocky Mountains – who knows where I’ll head next! Drop me a line in the comments below if you’d like to see me in your city.” Thank you to our Co-Chair of the Calgary walk, Valerie McLeod and her husband, Frank, for this great photo submission. #WheresMel?!? 🍋 (July 10, 2020)

“I stopped by Calgary this week! Although the Stampede was cancelled this year, the SPIRIT of the Stampede lives on! Just like the spirit of our BCC awareness walk lives on virtually this September. YAHOO!!!.” Thanks to Pam and Valerie for this great photo submission! 🍋 (July 17, 2020)

“Hey! It’s Mel again. 🍋 I am visiting the beautiful province of Québec and having some fun with our amazing volunteers! Our volunteers come in all shapes and sizes but their hearts are all BIG! 💛 Where will I end up next?!? PS. I have discovered that I am not scared of horses!” Thank you to Olivia (and her parents) and our Québec volunteer Alain for this great photo submission. (July 24, 2020)

“I’ve just discovered that the Citadel was built to protect Halifax Harbour and its Royal Navy Dockyard. I feel so honoured to visit this place!” Many thanks to volunteers Steve, a Royal Canadian Navy Veteran, and his wife, Dawn, for taking this photo. Most of all, a special thanks to Michelle in Halifax for suggesting this stop on Mel’s journey. Leave us a comment and we’ll do our best to get Mel to your city, too! (July 31, 2020)

“Hey everyone! Mel again – reporting to duty in Cambridge, Ontario. Stopping by to say HI to Monika Wragge, who requested my appearance. I’m happy to oblige! Where will I end up next??!” Thank you to Kerry, our National Program Director at BCC who works closely with all of our volunteers, for taking this amazing picture with her son. (August 11, 2020)

“Who says lemons and apples don’t get along?  🍋+🍎 Here I am at the Big Apple in Colborne, Ontario on a beautiful summer day!” Big thanks to Sandra, sister of our Communications Specialist Tawny, for this fun photo. (August 21, 2020)

“I am in beautiful Renfrew county near the Ottawa River and celebrating everything about this day – and journey! 🍋 Our volunteers come in all shapes and sizes and so do our bladder cancer survivors!” A truly special thank you to Matteo,  a 10 year bladder cancer survivor (he’s 12 now!) and his Mom, Lisa, who has shared so openly with us about Matteo’s bladder cancer journey over the years. Happy long weekend!. (September 4, 2020)

“Now, where was I going? 🍋 BCC’s virtual walk this year is all about walking where you are. I’ve got my walking shoes 👟 on, and something tells me that I *might* be in Edmonton.” Thanks to Sara, in Edmonton, for this great photo! (September 25, 2020)
