Born in Fort William, Ontario (now Thunder Bay), Michael is the youngest of 6 children. His dad and his uncle practiced law together for 40 years and influenced Mike’s decision to become a lawyer himself. Mike attended the University of Toronto, St. Michael’s College for his undergraduate degree where he met his wife Carolyn. They both attended Osgoode Hall Law School and in 1976 moved to Vancouver.
Mike has practiced law for 42 years and specializes in employment and labour law. On October 1, 2019 he joined his brother’s law firm Kane Shannon Weiler LLP as a senior member of its Employment and Labour Group. Mike and Carolyn are blessed with two children - Lauren, who is currently in medical school in Turin, Italy and David, who lives in Sydney, Australia and is in-house counsel for Optus, an Australian telecommunications company.
In January, 2017 Mike was diagnosed with non-muscular invasive high-grade bladder cancer. His urologist, Dr. Alan So, and his team, have taken wonderful care of Mike, and his treatments, to date, have been very successful.
Honored to have joined the Board of Directors, Mike is thrilled to be part of the Bladder Cancer Canada team and to work towards the organization’s mission to fund research, support patients, and increase awareness. He is looking forward to working with Drs. Alan So and Peter Black (members of Bladder Cancer Canada’s Medical Advisory Boards) and their colleagues in British Columbia, to provide a British Columbia presence at the board level of Bladder Cancer Canada.
